XPS 18 (2014)by Dell
PROS
- This all-in-one PC is thin, lightweight, and portable. At 5 pounds, it's lighter than some gaming laptops.
- The XPS 18 offers long battery life--more than five hours in real use--which is impressive for an 18-inch display.
- Dell includes a wireless mouse and keyboard, which helps offset the lack of ports.
CONS
- 3-D performance is poor due to the integrated Intel graphics. Anyone who wants to play recent PC games should look elsewhere.
- Available ports are limited. The XPS 18 has two USB ports, a headphone jack, and an SD card slot. There's no HDMI-out, DisplayPort or Ethernet port.
- The top-of-the-line model with a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD is expensive at $1500.

Another improvement is the 256GB SSD, which allowed the AIO to boot up in 14 seconds, or roughly half the time the original XPS 18 and its HDD took to boot. We do wish it came with a bigger SSD, however, preferably one twice the size, but we suppose external drives are always an option.

The ability to simply lift the screen off its stand and work from another room using its folding legs can be invaluable, and I enjoy the sense of having a portable desktop system.
Expensive? Yes, if you want the best configuration. Worth it? Definitely.

Though you likely won't be carrying the Dell XPS 18 (1820) on your daily commute, the system is certainly a worthy companion for moving around the house. Its battery pack gives you a healthy amount of rundown time, so you won't have to search for a power plug after an hour or two. It's light enough for you to carry around, and will work anywhere there's enough space to put it down.

The combination of a 1920 x 1080 display and integrated Intel HD 4400 graphics limits the XPS 18 to mostly casual games. Playing turn-based card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft at its native resolution on medium settings resulted in occasional lag, while World of Warcraft at auto settings and the same resolution resulted in an unplayable 15 fps.

You also won't find HDMI-out or DisplayPort connections for attaching the system to another display. An Ethernet port also goes missing. A trio of wireless technologies help offset the absent video and networking ports: The system features 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), and Bluetooth 4.0.
