VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • On the construction front, the build quality and finish are superb.
  • The AH-MM400 sound quality is smooth, well rounded, and natural.
  • The inline remote is super easy to use, thanks to the responsive recessed button.

CONS

  • Users with large heads and ears may find that the AH-MM400 feels uncomfortable after a while.
  • The volume may not crank up quite as high as you'd like.
  • The wood design is a turn-off for some people.
These reference-class cans are tuned for a flat equalizer, and they offer balanced sound for delivering music the way it was intended to be heard. The verdict is clear on the walnut ear cup design: You'll either love the wooden look or loathe it. Expect a good amount of passive isolation, allowing you to enjoy your tunes without distracting extraneous noise. You get two detachable cables: One has a built-in microphone and remote and a longer one is used to connect to other devices. The AH-MM400 over-ear headphones collapse for storage in the bundled pouch. The free Denon Audio App, for Android and iOS, lets you customize the sound with the five-band equalizer.

For a closed-back set they have a wide soundstage, alongside a powerful – but not overpowered – bass that's satisfying in noisy environments. In terms of sound personality, we'd describe them as smooth-sounding and natural, rather than attention-grabbers.

The clarity at the low end is really impressive. There's no lack of power to the bass, but it's tightly controlled and not overwhelming, and doesn't bleed into or muddy the crispness of the mid-range. It feels natural, not forced, and has a definite warm timbre.

The comfort is good, with a slight tendency to get a bit warm and sweaty when it's hot outside. This is probably due to the light pressure over the ears in combination with the leather imitation earpads.
