Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • Despite being small enough to fit into any backpack, the Mavic Pro offers advanced features such as collision avoidance and a built-in 4K video camera. It can also capture high-resolution stills in JPEG and RAW formats.
  • Some of the Mavic's flight modes are just incredible, including ActiveTrack, in which the drone follows a moving target--even one that's not you.
  • An optional virtual-reality headset lets you view live video from the Mavic's camera, effectively making you feel like you're flying.

CONS

  • For the best flight experience, you need the dedicated controller, which means you need the pricier Mavic Pro model. That controller can't accommodate tablets, only smartphones.
  • Because it's on the small side, the Mavic Pro can't handle wind as well as larger Phantom models.
  • Keep some Dramamine handy if you decide to don the VR goggles, as the video latency might bother you.
The DJI Mavic Pro is a small but advanced quadcopter, a model designed for portability thanks to its folding arms. Once in the air, it can record 4K video via a built-in camera, and it can fly all manner of advanced modes. However, you need a smartphone to operate it, even if you buy the optional controller.

But for the average consumer, and even pros on less demanding shoots, the Mavic Pro is the new gold standard ...

I was shocked to see just how small the Mavic Pro is in person. DJI describes it as about the size of a water bottle when folded, and if you've had any one-liter beverages lately, that's not far off.

Flip the switch on the side of the controller into Sport mode and it becomes ultra-responsive, darting around like a fly. It's fast, too, and you really get a sensation of its speed when you don DJI's new Goggles.

If you're a first-time drone flyer, there's no better drone to start with than the Mavic Pro. It's almost too easy to control.

The other nice thing about the Mavic Pro is the battery life. DJI claim you can get around 27 minutes of flight time in optimal conditions and from my tests there is no reason to think that isn’t true.
