PROS

  • Considering your tunes have to travel through water and end up moving through your cheekbones, the sound quality below the water surface is impressive.
  • Even though the Duo's controls are minimal, they are relatively easy to use while swimming.
  • As underwater headphones go, this unit is pretty comfy to wear.

CONS

  • It might take a bit of trial and error to fit the Duo between your head and the goggle straps, so that the speakers sit in the optimal position.
  • Some users reported problems with the USB magnetic docking station. In some cases, the Duo failed to connect to the computer.
  • If you swim with your head above water, you lose the full-on sound experience.
The Duo from Finis is the maker's third underwater music player. Unlike other companies' waterproof headphones with earbuds, the Duo features bone conduction technology, which sends sound waves through the cheekbones to deliver audio. Thanks to an integrated clip design, the Duo attaches to each side of your goggles, and the cord between each speaker goes behind your head. The unit houses four buttons for easy navigation while doing laps. The Duo provides 4GB of flash memory--roughly 1,000 songs--and it supports MP3 and WMA files. The included USB magnetic dock, which you plug in to your computer, offers file transfers and charging. Finis says that the Duo works in depths of up to 10 feet.

Flipping through songs is fairly easy and the play/pause button is easy to find while wearing it. The wire on the back is plenty long for even the largest head. The sound quality isn't 100% perfect but for being though bone conduction and underwater it is far from lacking.

It takes some practice to fit the Duo between your head and your goggle straps so that the speakers lay flush against your cheekbones, but once you get it right, you’re rewarded with clear sound, and a nice distraction when you’re spinning all your limbs

Sound quality was good, considering you are underwater and swimming...don’t take it into the open water. Firstly, you won’t be able to hear the sounds of nature; secondly, you won’t be able to hear the engine of the boat that is about to mow you down.
