A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • The Vivosmart is slim, sleek, and comfortable to wear, with a display that's easy to see.
  • It offers both fitness tracking features and smartphone notifications in a device that's cheaper than a full-fledged smartwatch.
  • The Vivosmart is waterproof, so it can be worn while swimming.

CONS

  • Garmin's sleep tracking is not as detailed as that of some of its rivals.
  • The mobile app is not as detailed or easy to use as rivals' apps.
  • Long notifications can be difficult to read on the Vivosmart's screen.
Garmin’s Vivosmart is not exactly a smartwatch, but it’s not just a fitness band, either. It’s somewhere in between. This wrist-worn device tracks your activity--including steps, distance, calories burned, heart rate, and sleep--while also delivering smart notifications from your phone. The Vivosmart connects to iPhones and some Android models (check Garmin’s site for a full list) via Bluetooth, and displays notifications of incoming calls, emails, and texts on your wrist. All the information is displayed directly on the Vivosmart's OLED display, making it easy to see just how active you have--or haven't--been.

Garmin Connect is used for many of Garmin's wearable devices, and as health apps go, it's completely inoffensive, albeit boring.

The black model I tried isn't what I would call stylish, but it's plain enough that it blends in with most outfits.

The Vivosmart is Garmin’s second activity tracker, but it really should be the only one. The original, the Garmin Vivofit, is clumsy and ugly where the Vivosmart is sleek and functional. This is the tracker you should buy.

Instead of having to check my smartphone for detailed updates about my workout progress, I can see them all on my wrist. That’s especially useful when I’m in the middle of a workout and don’t have my phone near me and want to see how much longer I have before I can stop and go eat a large jar of Nutella.
