VERDICT
A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • The Android Marshmallow OS is unmodified, and the unlocked hardware works across most carriers.
  • The Nexus 5X has a fantastic camera with excellent low-light capabilities.
  • It has a smooth and snappy performance with quick startup. It's also a good size for one-handed use.

CONS

  • The plastic case makes the phone look cheap, even though it has a sturdy feel.
  • The speakers sounded tinny, and battery life is a problem.
  • It has no Micro SD card slot and no wireless charging.
The Nexus 5X is the successor to Google's Nexus 5 and is a less expensive option than Google’s Nexus 6P. It has an unlocked and unmodified version of Android Marshmallow 6, so it's a purist's dream. With snappy performance and an excellent fingerprint scanner, startup is fast. The plastic case seems cheap, but it has a good solid feel. The Nexus 5X has less-than-great battery life, and with no wireless charging and a USB Type-C connector, you’ll want to buy extra chargers for car and office. The 12-megapixel camera takes excellent pictures and has good low light level capability. The 5X comes in 16GB and 32GB storage, but it lacks a Micro SD card slot, so you may need to use the cloud or download often.

Overall the Nexus 5X is great in some areas, lacklustre in others. But it's a Nexus - and boy oh boy, do we love Nexus.
