VERDICT
Recommended, but seriously flawed. There are probably better alternatives.

PROS

  • The Hero 4 Session's small size allows it to be placed wherever the action is.
  • The dual microphone design improves sound quality in challenging environments.
  • No extra housing is needed to shoot video underwater thanks to the Session's waterproof construction.

CONS

  • There is no preview of live recording.
  • The built-in battery prevents battery swapping to prolong a shooting session.
  • Price-to-feature ratio is unfavorable compared to other GoPro offerings.
GoPro's Hero4 Session is the company's smallest, lightest and most rugged action cam. Its diminutive size allows adventure seekers to mount the camera in places inaccessible to Session's bigger brothers. In another departure from its brethren, the Session is waterproof to a depth of 33 feet without needing an optional housing. With its one-button operation, the unit is designed to be simple to use. It also has a clever microphone arrangement. If the camera senses too much ambient noise--such as wind--in its forward mic, it switches to a rear-facing mic for better sound quality.

The good news is that we’ve dropped the Session half a dozen times during testing and it’s shrugged off all the bangs and bashes.

Like the name implies, the Session is GoPro's grab-and-go model -- the one that you'll take to shoot that skate session or ski session or hanging-out-with-your-family session, without having to worry as much about where and how you're going to shoot with it.
