VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • Sound quality is superb for the most part, although you might notice a bit of distortion in the upper registers.
  • The iGrado gives you a secure fit with no slipping and sliding.
  • The headphone requires no battery and no battery recharging. Instead, the iGrado draws power directly from the portable device.

CONS

  • The hand is made of stiff, inflexible plastic, and it can feel uncomfortable on your neck.
  • The iGrado is neither sweat-resistant nor easy to clean.
  • The cord is only 4 feet long.
Based upon the around-the-neck styling first popular among runners, the iGrado represents a departure from tradition for Grado Labs, which originally made its mark with high-end, handcrafted, retro-style headphones. Budget-priced and made of plastic, the iGrados use an open-back design aimed at letting runners (and others) listen to music while staying alert to ambient sounds such as oncoming cars and honking horns. When you hear these iGrado babies, though, you'll probably recognize that the same Grado audio quality is largely there.

The only thing to bear in mind is that, because they’re open-back on-ears, they leak an awful lot of sound. Also, some folk might not find the neckband design quite as comfortable as other options out there.

Simply put; no other headphones get close to the iGrados’ performance at less than £50.

...given Grado's audiophile roots, those in the market for the iGrado are likely to be less interested in the product's looks and more in the sound quality, which, thankfully, is indeed "Grado sound" in a portable product. The iGrado actually use the same drivers as the SR-60, resulting in a warm, enjoyable sound with good detail and midrange and solid, punchy bass. Bass extension isn't as deep as that of higher-end headphones, but it's good for sub-$100 headphones.

The $49 iGrado headphones lack the funky retro vibe of their more expensive siblings, and their sound quality doesn't impress me either.

Best known - in fact, widely revered- for its high-end, audiophile headphones, Grado shocked a lot of people with these portable, iPod friendly cans, not least because they eschew the company's very traditional, old-fashioned over the head design for a street-style, neckband construction.
