PROS

  • This set of full-sized headphones delivers exceptional sound quality; expect first-rate detail, including a punchy bass and a smooth treble.
  • As big headphones go, they are easy to wear over long periods of time.
  • The HE400i is considerably lighter than its predecessor, the HE400, making portability more of a possibility.

CONS

  • The 1.5-meter cord might be too short for your listening habits--or it may get caught in things.
  • The open-back design allows some sound to leak out.
  • The HE400i doesn't come with inline controls.
HiFiMan is one of the few headphone makers that uses planar magnetic flat drivers. These full-size headphones sport a large diaphragm, which produces superior audio with low distortion. Your music sounds "alive" in a more dynamic way, compared to regular headphone drivers. The HE400i's beveled ear cushions are made of pleather and velour, while the polymer ear cups have a glossy charcoal finish. These headphones are designed to plug into an AV receiver or headphone amplifier--but they'll also work just fine with portable devices. The box includes a 1.5-meter cable. Originally the product shipped with a 3.5 mm/6.35 mm plug, but the product now ships with a 2.5 mm plug-in connector.

One thing I should mention is that these are “open” headphones, like most quality phones are. This means that they allow sound to pass through the backs of the cups. The sound quality is better, but you give up isolation. So if you’re trying to drown out the sounds of screaming kids, this isn’t going to work for you.

The HE400i is for the modern pop and rock lover who wants his bass heavy but detailed and wants his experience to be a highly musical one. It is a pick-up and go experience and a very good one at that.

Aesthetically, the HE-400i is quite stunning, and while the surrounds aren’t metal, they look like polished and oiled gun-metal parts. The cable provided is of high quality but short length (under 5 feet).

Where the HE-400i clearly outshines its more expensive big brother, is when using with a portable device. I was almost taken aback at how well the HE-400i sounded. Full bodied sound, an open soundstage, and plenty of volume to hear all the details.
