A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • The GX8 is one attractive device thanks to its metal housing.
  • The 3,000 mAh battery offers enough juice to get through a day and maybe a little more.
  • The camera is the GX8's standout feature, with crisp, colorful photos.

CONS

  • A phone that ships with Android 5.1 several months after Android 6.0 Marshmallow was made available just isn't right.
  • Despite an attractive price point, Huawei's own Honor 5X is just as capable and a full $100 less expensive than the GX8.
  • The older Snapdragon 615 processor can show its age when multitasking.
Huawei's GX8 comes equipped with features you'd expect from a smartphone that's double the current $299 price. Boasting a 5.5-inch display, the GX8 is powered by a Snapdragon 616 processor and 3000 mAh battery. It comes with 16GB of storage, expandable up to 128GB via microSD. Android 5.1 is installed on the GX8, running atop Huawei's EMUI Android skin. A fingerprint sensor and 13-megapixel camera adorn the back of the GX8. It's available in three colors: champagne, gray, and gold.

The Huawei GX8 leaves me with mixed emotions. On the one hand, its design surprises with its premium appearance and solid build quality, but this doesn’t contrast well with the handset’s poorly integrated screen.

Here in the states, Huawei is pretty far from a household name. But if the GX8 is any indication, the manufacturer could find itself occupying Motorola's vacated spot as a maker of respectable, well-priced, stylish mid-range phones.

The speaker is able to provide clear and crisp sound, but at a hushed tone, as the volume never gets very loud. In fact, I found it almost impossible to hear any video when others were talking in a different room.

On paper, the main camera on the GX8 stands out, especially when considered in a mid-range context. We're looking at a sapphire glass-protected, 13-megapixel RGBW unit, complete with a dual tone LED flash, wide f/2.0 aperture, and optical image stabilization (a rarity in this segment!).
