PROS

  • These gaming headphones do a superb job with surround sound. Overall audio quality is excellent, with powerful but not ear-rattling bass.
  • Although the cans aren't wireless, the accompanying cable is plenty long enough to give you lots of freedom of movement.
  • For a gaming headset, the F.R.E.Q. 7 offers easy setup.

CONS

  • The price tag is pretty steep.
  • The headband could be more flexible, and the ear cups are on the small side, although most people will get a comfortable fit.
  • The integrated Dolby Surround Sound and EQ settings work only with PCs--not mobile devices.
If you're a PC gamer seeking surround sound, the F.R.E.Q. 7 could be the right headset for you. Equipped with Dolby Headphone 7.1 Surround Sound technology, along with Dolby Pro Logic IIx, this headset from Mad Katz provides just about the most immersive gaming experience you're likely to get outside of a multi-speaker 7.1 setup. Built-in EQ settings let you adjust the frequency of sound channels to optimize the audio for different types of games and music. The headphones come with a snap-on, noise-canceling microphone for communication with teammates, and a nice stand for display and storage.

The F.R.E.Q. 7 is a USB surround-sound headset powered by Dolby headphone technology and twin Neodymium 50mm drivers. In addition to virtual 7.1 surround sound, the Dolby-powered tech can upmix standard stereo signals into virtualized surround sound that (according to Mad Catz) “gives you an edge over gamers limited to stereo sound.”

The main selling point of the Mad Catz F.R.E.Q. 7 is, of course, the sound quality - especially in games. With Dolby Headphone 7.1 Surround Sound technology, combined with Dolby Pro Logic IIx, the headphones promise immersive surround sound, but do they deliver? While headphones reliant on digital technology to replicate surround sound are never going to compete with a multi-speaker 7.1 setup, the virtual surround worked pretty well - especially with ambient noises in games, which made for an immersive experience while sound quality on the whole was excellent.

The only fault that I could find in the F.R.E.Q 7 gaming headset was that the EQ and Dolby surround sound only works on the PC though the USB connection. When playing on my mobile devices such as my iPhone and Android tablet the only break in the quality was that the Dolby wasn’t there but the F.R.E.Q 7 still sounds amazing regardless.

The Mad Catz FREQ 7 has great features, like easy toggling between surround and stereo sound, to accommodate games that are best suited for one or the other...The headband is not the most flexible, and the ear cups are on the small side, but for most people, this won't be a problem. They fit snugly and comfortably.

One oddly frustrating thing about the F.R.E.Q. 7 is its volume wheel. In any high-end headset, we expect to be able to quickly adjust playback volume from the headset itself—usually with a button or roller on the earcup or on an in-line remote control located somewhere along the cable. The F.R.E.Q. 7 features a nice scroll wheel on the right earcup, but it is almost bizarrely unresponsive. Each spin of the wheel only barely moves the overall volume.
