Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The Helvetica 1 Smartwatch is stunning to look at, with a classic Swiss watch design and a solid build.
  • Its quartz battery lasts up to two years.
  • It includes accurate activity and sleep tracking.

CONS

  • Mondaine calls it a smartwatch, but it doesn't deliver any smartphone notifications.
  • It's pricey--very pricey.
  • The sleep mode is not automatic; you must remember to turn it on to track your sleep.
Mondaine’s Helvetica 1 is the first smartwatch from the renowned Swiss watchmaker, but it doesn’t look like a typical smartwatch. Instead it looks like what it is: a luxury timepiece. The Helvetica 1 features a simple, sophisticated face and a quality leather strap, but it doesn’t have all the features found on a typical smartwatch. The Helvetica 1 does not connect to a smartphone to offer notifications or anything similar; instead, its high-tech features center on activity and sleep tracking. The watch counts your steps and sleep, and shares that information with a mobile app or on the small dial at the bottom of the watch face.

It might not boast the same level of functionality as competing full-fledged smartwatches, but it does connect with iOS and Android devices to offer activity and sleep tracking, and also happens to be one of the most attractive wearables we've seen so far.

All in all, the Mondaine Helvetica 1 Smart Watch and app do what they say and look good doing them. It’s tech built on a good existing platform, MotionX, so it doesn’t have silly issues that a first time product might. But, I’m just not sure how useful it is.
