VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The Nokia Lumia 1020 is capable of capturing high-resolution images from a device that fits in your pocket and doubles as your primary communications tool.
  • The camera grip option makes this cell phone much like the point-and-shoot camera you once carried, but it adds bulk.
  • The phone's battery life is solid.

CONS

  • Without the camera grip option, the phone can be awkward to hold.
  • The Lumia 1020 uses Windows Phone 8, which means you're limited to Microsoft's evolving app ecosystem.
  • This handset lacks a memory card expansion slot -- a big detriment if you're going to take advantage of the phone's high-resolution camera, which captures images at up to four to five times the resolution of competing phones' cameras.
A massive 41-megapixel camera and a battery grip accessory put this Windows phone into a camera phone class all its own. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is defined by its camera, though, with little else to distinguish it from its Android and Apple competition.

The 1020 is one of its best devices yet, and certainly the easiest to sell — if you really love cameras, you’ll really love the Lumia 1020. There are plenty of compelling Windows Phone 8 options, from the gorgeous 925 to the feature-packed 1020, but they can’t change the fact that Windows Phone 8 itself just isn’t that compelling.

For those planning to use the camera more than casually, consider getting the camera grip, which makes it feel, well, more like a camera. It adds weight and bulk, but crucially it also adds an extra battery: snapping away will drain the battery surprisingly quickly.

While this Lumia phone is a premium device, its platform is its major drawback. And though the camera is the best there is on any smartphone in the market, you're probably going to spend more time interfacing with the operating system than shooting photos.

The Lumia 1020 has an amazing camera, the best in a smartphone, and will tempt most smartphone photographers. However, it's expensive for what is essentially a now out-of-date Lumia 920 with a better snapper.
