PROS

  • The G7 captures 4K UHD video, and it does so with the added bonus of a still photo burst mode for grabbing stills from a 4K video.
  • Ergonomic design makes this camera comfortable to hold and to navigate using its external controls.
  • The DMC-G7 shoots at 6 frames per second, and it does so using a continuous autofocus tracking system.

CONS

  • The Wi-Fi features are complicated to use.
  • The G7's rated battery life is below average, and the battery suffers when you enable 4K video capture.
  • The dynamic range is not as good as on APS-C cameras.
As a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 delivers a lot of function in its stylish, relatively compact form. The G7 is a good alternative to a DSLR camera. Sold as a body only or as a kit with a 14-42 mm lens, the G7 offers flexible shooting options and 4K video capture.

The G7 is the clear victor for video capture, and its fast, flexible, touchscreen-operated autofocus system is the best of the bunch, too. That makes it at least as good in our view, and equally deserving of a Best Buy award.

The Panasonic Lumix G7 offers an impressive range of features, including 4K video recording, a high resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF), rapid performance and focus speeds, as well as high image quality with a newly updated image processing engine. The camera makes 4K recording not just about high quality video, but makes it easy to capture photos at 30fps and then select your favourite 8 megapixel image(s) to save.

Ultimately, the G7 is the ideal compromise for anyone that wants 4K video, superb stills quality, and doesn't want to spend a boatload. Now that I think about it: that's not much of a compromise at all.

Its new features might not be particularly stand-out, but in terms of logical progression the G7 feels like a sensible re-rub of its predecessor. If it cost more money we’re not sure it’d warrant existence, but at this price, with these features on offer, it’s hard to shoot the G7 down.

Even if you're not onboard the 4K train, the DMC-G7 is still a very appealing mirrorless camera, once again offering a lot of features and performance at an attractive price, although it lacks the more characteristic retro styling of the Olympus PEN range or the Fujifilm X-series.

Its photo and video quality is quite good for its price class, especially if you spring for something a bit better than the kit lens. Photos have somewhat better-than-average dynamic range for a Four Thirds size sensor, colors are quite accurate, and its low light JPEG photos remain decently detailed thorugh ISO 1600.

There’s plenty to like about the G7, and it has a good mix of features that we tend to like about compact system cameras. There’s an articulating, touch-sensitive screen, a viewfinder which is of a high quality, a quick AF system and a well performing sensor.

The unique selling point of the Lumix G7 may be 4k video, but even if you ignore this feature entirely, it remains a highly compelling mid-range camera. The performance and feature-set is amongst the best of its peer group, and as I've said before having access to the extensive Micro Four Thirds lens catalogue is a key benefit for Panasonic and Olympus bodies.

While the G7 definitely has the high-end features and performance to be a backup camera for an enthusiast, it’s a better all-purpose camera for the casual shooter who wants an ILC, especially for travel. Put on the 14-140mm and you’re covered for most shooting scenarios.
