Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The ZS100 provides not just one but two image-stabilization systems. One is for still photography; the other is a separate 5-axis system for video.
  • The camera introduces a feature called Post Focus for quickly focusing on and extracting images from 4K video,
  • Another advanced feature, Live Edit mode, lets you pan and zoom a 1080p crop within a 4K frame while you're filming.

CONS

  • This pocket camera is indeed tiny enough to fit into a pocket, but at 11 ounces, it is kind of heavy to carry there.
  • While the LCD is touch-capable, the screen is fixed.
  • If you're interested in environmental sealing, an external flash shoe, or panorama shooting, you need a different camera.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 (TZ100 in Europe) is a small compact travel camera that manages to squeeze in a large 1-inch sensor--the same size found in some major DSLRs. As a result, image quality tends to be excellent, even in low-light conditions. Beyond that, Panasonic's pocket-sized camera packs an ample 10X integrated zoom lens. Other compelling features include 4K video recording, a 5-centimeter macro mode for close-up shots, a bright f/2.8-5.9 Leica lens, RAW shooting, and an 1166K-dot electronic viewfinder.

The 10x zoom lens starts at a nice wide f/2.8, but comes a much narrower f/5.9 at the long end of that zoom. While certainly capable of capturing objects from a distance, the ZS100 also has a good macro capability with a 5 cm minimum focusing distance. That versatile lens is in front of a 20 megapixel 1" sensor, much larger than those found in basic point and shoots.

Traditionally travel zooms have used small sensors (~29mm2) to allow the inclusion of long lenses in a small overall package. Impressively, the ZS100 fits a much larger sensor (~116mm2) while still offering a useful zoom range and sensibly-sized form factor. The larger sensor offers better image quality, which has prompted Panasonic to offer a maximum ISO of 12800 on the ZS100, with an extended setting of 25600.

With the Lumix ZS100 digital camera, Panasonic takes its long-running ZS-series in a very interesting new direction! The Panasonic ZS100 is the first model in the ZS lineup to be based around a relatively large 1-inch image sensor, instead of the more typical 1/2.3-inch or smaller...It's the same size as used previously in the larger, SLR-styled Panasonic FZ1000, as well as in the unusual non-zoom Panasonic CM1 Communication Camera.

This is the same sensor as is found in Panasonic's top-end bridge camera, the very successful FZ1000. In the TZ100 it's combined with a new Venus Engine processor and a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 9.1-91mm f/2.8-5.9 lens which has a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 25-250mm. There's also Panasonic's Power OIS stabilization system for stills photography and 5-axis hybrid OIS stabilization for video.

The new Lumix ZS100 is a welcome and generous improvement on the ZS50, which Panasonic debuted at last year's show. It has a 20-megapixel 1-inch sensor (the ZS50 used a 12.1-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor), and a new, brighter f2.8-5.9 Leica lens...But the flashiest feature is the addition of 4K video recording. It's not something everyone needs or wants, but finding it in a package as small as this is a selling point for those who are looking

Like the Sony RX100 IV and Canon G7 X, the Lumix DMC ZS100 (or TZ100 depending on your region) uses a 1-inch-type (12.8 x 9.6 mm) sensor. In this case it's a 20.1-megapixel MOS offering which is paired with Panasonic's Venus Engine image processor and a 10x zoom F2.8-F5.9 lens which gives a versatile 25mm-250mm equivalent. This lets the camera take quality images in a variety of lighting conditions and it has an ISO range of 125 to 12800 (expandable to 80 to 25600).

The camera also includes Panasonic’s new Post Focus mode that lets you refocus an image afterward. In a nutshell, it’s a type of racking mode that shoots a 4K movie file with various focus points. You can preview the images, and once you find the one you want, it saves it as an 8-megapixel JPEG, like in 4K Photo.

Panasonic's Lumix TZ100, or ZS100 as it's known in North America, is the new top model in its enormously popular travel-zoom series. Announced in January 2016, it follows Panasonic's trend of waiting a year between new models, but after a decade of gradually increasing the zoom range from 10x to 30x while sticking with roughly the same-sized tiny sensor, 2016 sees the TZ100 / ZS100 making the leap to a much larger 1in sensor and a new product category. This is big news for the TZ / ZS series which traditionally exploited a tiny sensor to deliver a huge zoom in a pocketable body.
