Recommended, but seriously flawed. There are probably better alternatives.

PROS

  • This lightweight, stylish, stainless steel smartwatch is for people who don't want to wear a computer on their wrist.
  • The battery lasts a lot longer than the Apple Watch, and a 15-minute charge propels you for a whole day.
  • It runs the same superb OS as the Pebble Time and includes the handy Timeline mode.

CONS

  • Instead of a week or more, the battery only runs for about two days.
  • It's not waterproof like other Pebble smartwatches, so don't wear it swimming.
  • IPhone users may want to pass on the Pebble Time Round, which works much, much better with Android phones.
The Pebble Time Round is a real departure for Pebble; this round, flat, and seemingly weightless smartwatch looks like a traditional wristwatch--and while aesthetics are still a matter of personal preference, the Pebble Round has a much classier look than most of the other, squarish Pebbles. The trade-off for the round and flat appearance, though, is a more limited battery life and limited water resistance. But in almost all other respects, this is just a more stylish version of its Pebble Time siblings, running the same software and compatible with many of the same apps and watch faces.

While the Time and Time Steel are water-resistant up to 30 meters and can be worn while swimming, the Time Round can not. As Pebble puts it, the Time Round is only "splash-resistant" -- you can still get it wet, but it shouldn't be submerged in water.

I can't tell I'm wearing the Pebble Time Round. It slips under my sleeve, and hugs my wrist. The stainless steel body and slightly domed anti-glare Gorilla Glass-covered display feel and look great.

If there's one thing off about the design here, it's the bezel. Despite having an overall smaller form than most smartwatches, the bezel practically dwarfs the circular display. It does show numbers around the perimeter to denote the time, but they're redundant considering the screen itself already does this.

No matter which you buy or how fancy the leather sounds, there’s still nothing sexy or luxurious about the Time Round. Its design is more like a $30 Timex or Swatch than something a guy in white gloves would lift out of a glass case. It’s not ugly, though, it’s just utilitarian.

Pebble likes to boast of the thousands of apps and watchfaces available on its platform, but the selection for the Time Round is considerably smaller. Apps and watchfaces that have not been updated for the round display are simply not available to it, leaving roughly 90 apps and 275 watchfaces to choose from at time of publish.

For the first time since the debut of the original Pebble smartwatch, the company's fifth wearable actually looks like a watch. However, by looking more like a regular watch, the Time Round loses some features that actually made it smart.

In an attempt to make up for the smaller model requiring more frequent charging, Pebble claims you can gain a day’s worth of use from just 15 minutes of charge time. I wasn’t able to effectively test the company’s claim, but did see a 30% jump in battery percentage in the allotted charge time.

There was one useful case I found: navigating music while my phone was in my bag. I typically wear bluetooth headphones when walking about the city, and I have a trial of Apple Music on my work iPhone. The music navigation was quite useful, because it meant not having to carry an iPhone 6 Plus around in my pocket, which can be pretty uncomfortable.

The elephant in the room, of course, is where the Time Round fits in today’s smartwatch market. It’s not the cheapest, and cross-smartphone compatibility, one of Pebble’s longstanding selling points, has since been adopted by Android Wear.

Pebble’s software is still strong, allowing for voice commands and enjoying the benefit of a robust enough app store. You’ll be able to get notifications and fitness stats with Misfit’s tracking app. You can find custom watchfaces on that app store, too, making it just as customizable as other smartwatches.

While Motorola opts for separate layers for battery and board inside, Pebble Time Steel does everything in its power to be as flat as possible. This device is very, very thin at 7.5mm, and weighs in at just 28 grams. Not that you'll be comparing one smartwatch to the next for weight, as they're all very light at this point.
