A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • The sound quality impresses listeners with deep bass response and clear highs.
  • The company touts 12 hours of battery life, and the headphones usually live up to that expectation.
  • Depending on your sense of style, you might dig the retro-and-rugged look of these cans.

CONS

  • The single button for multiple functions is poorly designed and frustrating to use.
  • The bundled accessories feel relatively skimpy considering the price.
  • After a few hours of wearing, the Hinge Wireless headphones can start to feel uncomfortable. Your mileage may vary.
Polk tries to combine a lightweight wearing experience with a rugged design. As the product name indicates, these cans sport a hinge that lets you fold down the headphones for easy toting. The over-ear leatherette pads are plush and reduce external noise to give you a passive noise-isolation listening experience. The Hinge Wireless detachable cable houses inline controls, and you can expect about 12 hours of play time. You'll find a jog dial built in to the right earcup, which gives you one-finger control for your music and calls. Available color options include black, blue, and camel.

We also wanted to try the Polk headphones in a non-sitting situation, so we tried them out in the yard while doing some gardening. The Bluetooth feature was great for this, but when bending down and moving around a lot the fit wasn’t quite secure enough; more suited for sitting-down activities.

At top, unwise listening levels on tracks with intense sub-bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the headphones deliver massive low-frequency response...The result is a bright, sculpted sound that will please fans of booming bass, but not those looking for a more accurate, flat response sound signature.

Wearing the Hinges was a fairly comfortable experience. The 7.9-ounce headphones sat flush against my ears, although I felt more pressure around the top than I did the bottom...I also noticed that the cans wobbled if I moved my head to the left or right too quickly.

The control wheel is squishy and difficult to use—I frequently found myself trying to turn up the volume, only to accidentally pause the song or linger too long on the button and actually turn off the headphones.

As for the sound, these are a bass-heavy headphones — a bit too bassy for our ears — but they don’t give up much to achieve that umph. Midrange and treble are both clearly delivered, though we wish there was a bit more detail and definition in the mix.

Despite their price, the headphones don't feel like they cost $200...There's a fine balance between a device being light and feeling flimsy, and the Hinge falls on the less desirable side of that spectrum.

[Y]ou can hear what you’re supposed to hear at lower volumes, and they don’t distort or become muddy when you do need (or want) to crank them up. This is especially true for music, but I found them adequate for iPad and iPhone gaming and movies, as well.

Overall of all the Bluetooth headphones I have tested I must admit that these are the best overall sounding. All my music was clear no matter at what volume levels I listened. If you are a bass junkie I am afraid these headphones won’t please you.
