PROS

  • The updated Roku Streaming Stick is slimmer and faster than the previous model and half the cost of a Roku box.
  • In addition to being portable, the new Streaming Stick offers improved support for connecting to secured Wi-Fi networks--a big plus for travelers.
  • The Streaming Stick delivers the same Roku channel lineup as the more expensive Roku models, and it provides a reasonably good voice search.

CONS

  • The Streaming Stick does not support Ethernet, which can limit its usefulness in some crowded Wi-Fi environments.
  • The device lacks support for 4K streaming.
  • The Streaming Stick's remote does not come with an earbud jack for private listening.
The 2016 update to Roku's already excellent media streaming stick still manages to gild the lily at a modest price. Like its predecessor, it plugs into an HDMI port on any TV and is powered by a standard outlet or powered USB port. It's slimmer and slightly longer than its predecessor, and it sports a quad-core processor that makes it eight times more powerful than its older sibling. It supports the relatively new Roku OS Hotel and Dorm Connect feature for hookups on secured Wi-Fi networks when traveling, as well as Roku's smartphone remote app. It lacks only support for Ethernet and 4K, and an earbud jack on the remote for private listening.

Although you do need a reliable, high-speed internet connection to fully utilize the new Roku Quad-Core Streaming Stick (3600R) to it’s highest potential, most networks can easily deliver the speeds you need. We recommend a connection with at least 15 megabits per second for the best possible experience without lag or latency issues.

There’s no pressing need to upgrade if you have a good Roku already, and if you’re an Amazon Prime diehard, the Fire TV Stick (and its Alexa-enabled remote) is still a great buy. If your smart TV doesn't cut it, though, this is where your media streamer search should begin.
