PROS

  • The more pixels, the better. The Note 5's screen is arguably the best screen ever seen on a smartphone, offering 518 pixels per inch. In comparison, Apple's iPhone 6 Plus offers 401 pixels per inch.
  • The camera captures high-quality photos and offers multiple shooting modes, including a new live streaming option for YouTube.
  • Speedy performance across the board with few, if any, hiccups despite Samsung's proprietary Android skin still found on the device.

CONS

  • Gone are the days of a Samsung device offering a removable battery or microSD card.
  • Those customers of a carrier that's ditched subsidized pricing better get ready to pay a lot of money for the Note 5.
  • Maximum storage available is 64GB, which isn't going to be enough for everyone.
Samsung created the term phablet with its original Galaxy Note, and now nearly every smartphone manufacturer is making a device as big as, if not bigger than, the Note 5. For this year's model, Samsung has done away with a microSD slot and removable battery, instead opting for a glass back and aluminum housing. The Note 5 features a 5.7-inch QHD display, 16 MP camera, and a redesigned S Pen with added software functionality. Just don't insert the S Pen upside down into the device; you'll break the S Pen system.

Samsung’s Note has finally grown up – It’s done playing with pleather, imitating Band-Aids, and shining cheaply in plastic. The Note 5 is a stunner – just like the Galaxy S6. Its metal frame gleams subtly, and the glass back glows like a pearl.

From a specs sheet aspect, the Note5 has all the internals to make it a formidable thing to choose over the competition – more so when its S Pen features add to the overall experience; you don’t get that on other phones.

All of that translates into the Note 5 camera snapping brighter photos with more on-point color accuracy compared to last year's Galaxy Note 4. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a photo come out the first time you hit the virtual shutter button.

My favorite new S Pen feature is the ability to grab screenshots of entire web pages — or anything else that might scroll off the screen. You can capture a bunch and it launches you directly into an annotation screen where you can mark it up and then save it or send it off.

There actually isn't a single thing I can even come close to complaining about on the Galaxy Note 5's display. It's so great that you don't even perceive specific high and low points of the panel — you just use the phone and enjoy it.

This year the S Pen looks higher-end, with a faux metal build, but it's still made of plastic. That's one of the only things we would have changed about the Note 5: we finally have a fully premium Note, now let's get a premium stylus to match it.

Of course, it's darned big. The Note 5's dimensions are nearly identical to those of the iPhone 6 Plus. It says something that Samsung could give the Note 5 a bigger screen (5.7 inches) than the iPhone 6 Plus, yet design a fractionally shorter and narrower phone.
