Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The overall sound quality rivals that of wired headphones in the same price league.
  • Lightweight and garbed in a soft velvety material, these headphones are supremely comfortable to wear.
  • The RS 180's RF wireless does not require direct line-of-sight in order to operate, unlike some of its competitors.

CONS

  • If you're seeking budget headphones, these cans certainly aren't for you.
  • The open-back design allows for some sound leakage.
  • The RS-180 lacks some audio options found in its competitors' products.
If you are interested in sharing movies or music wirelessly among multiple people in your house without waking up the kids or anyone else, Sennheiser RS 180 is just the ticket. Sennheiser provides a tower-like transmitter that sends wireless signals to up to four sets of headphones and acts as a charging station for the two AAA NiMH batteries concealed inside the ear cups. Rather than infrared or Bluetooth, these open-back headphones use Kleer's lossless radio frequency wireless technology.

The tower-like transmitter doubles as a hanger for the 'phones and charges the two AAA NiMH concealed in the cups. The shape is identical to that of the RS 160s, and both models use KLEER's ‘lossless' RF system, but the 180s benefit from nicer materials – and so a more premium and comfortable feel. The 180s are open-backed, and sound benefits as a result.

The Sennheiser RS180 wireless headphones utilize a radio frequency to transmit a signal to up to four different earphones. The batteries are rechargeable and the earpieces are comfortable. Despite having a superb sound and standing out from most of the competition, the Sennheiser RS180 set does not have as many sound and audio options as the Pioneer SE-DIR800C model.

The RS 180 is an open-back set of headphones, so its sound has a tendency to leak out and be heard by anyone nearby. That might rule it out for use in bed, and if that's a concern, Sennheiser's closed-back RS 170 wireless headphones will be a better alternative.

Unlike wireless headphones we’ve tested in the past, we never heard any hissing, static, dropouts or other interference with the RS 180. It has decent range — about 100 feet or so, depending on how many walls are present — but nowhere near the 300 feet that Sennheiser claims.

They're also super-comfortable, clad in velvety fabric, and they nestle on your head like a creature designed to secretly consume the brain. They can pump out bass like nobody's business, ripping through your music and giving vocal recordings that extra warm edge. Basically, they're everything you want a pair of headphones to be.

The Sennheiser RS180 & RS220 both use digital technology to transmit the data from the docking station to the headphone, yet the technology used is not the same. The newer RS220 uses the DSSS technology with an asynchronous transfer. This means the headphone is in charge of the data transfer and not the transmitter and we all know this is a very good thing to have.

You can listen in other rooms, sit out on the deck, dance around. You can go to the loo while still humming away. We spent an hour shredding foliage in the garden while streaming a podcast to the RS 180s, until our sweating head put the soft ear-cups in danger of over-soakage.
