PROS

  • The Simple.tv streams live and recorded TV shows to a variety of devices, including mobile devices running Android and iOS, computers, and TVs via Roku or Chromecast.
  • The device includes two tuners, so you can watch or record two shows at the same time.
  • It allows you to share content with friends.

CONS

  • The Simple.tv does not include a hard drive; you must supply your own.
  • It has to be connected to your antenna, and it doesn't support Wi-Fi, so it must be placed near your router, too.
  • The fan is loud enough to be distracting.
Simple.tv is a DVR for the cord-cutting crowd: It’s a DVR for over-the-air TV, allowing you to record and play back TV content without cable. Simple.tv connects to your antenna by a coaxial cable and your network by Ethernet. It requires that you supply a USB hard drive to store content. You can then interact with Simple.tv using a Web browser, a Roku, or an Android or iOS device. Recorded and live TV can be played on all these devices, though doing so on anything other than your home computer requires a subscription to Simple.tv’s Premier service, at $60 annually.

In general use, it's pretty straightforward and setting up recordings is fairly easy. It's also one of the cheapest in the long run.

Live streaming TV from all devices was an equally dismal experience. Sometimes, if I was lucky, the program would start for a few seconds before it stopped to buffer and never started up again.

It's right there in the name: simple.tv. Yes, everything about the product is simple. Sometimes to a fault - it could use a few bells and whistles, but I'm sure those will come in future releases.
