VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The SUB significantly improves the overall sound of any Sonos system.
  • Setup of the SUB is extremely simple using the Sonos controller app.
  • Sound from the SUB is distortion-free and without cabinet rattle.

CONS

  • At $700, the SUB doesn't come cheap.
  • The glossy black finish is a dust magnet and will require frequent cleaning.
  • The SUB can only be used in a Sonos setup. If you decide to switch to another brand of speakers, you won't be able to use the SUB with them.
The Sonos SUB is a wireless subwoofer designed to work with Sonos amplified components--the CONNECT:AMP, PLAY:5, PLAY:3, PLAY:1, and PLAYBAR. The SUB's design allows it to be placed nearly anywhere in a room. It uses two Class-D digital amplifiers and includes support for wired Ethernet and wireless 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity. It can also be used in a SonosNet mesh network. The SUB weighs just over 36 pounds and comes in glossy black.

Even with the volume cranked up high, we heard none of the rattles you'd hear from a subwoofer with anything less than a top-notch shell.

Regretfully, not a great value
As much as I love my Sonos, I've found that the fairly expensive Sub doesn't significantly enhance the music. The bass enhancement is more subtle than I was expecting. It has simply not proven to be a good value for me.
