PROS

  • This compact camera delivers first-class image quality.
  • The 4K videos look awesome; expect details to be crisp and vibrant.
  • The ability to shoot silently is a bonus that comes with negligible image noise cost.

CONS

  • The battery life of the a7R II is not great. Expect approximately 290 shots using the viewfinder or 340 shots with the LCD.
  • The buffer can be sluggish to clear, which makes a quick review of your images and a focus check difficult.
  • The camera lacks a touch screen.
Sony's Alpha a7R II is a 42.4 megapixel full frame, mirrorless camera that features the world's first 35 mm back-illuminated CMOS sensor. The a7R II includes a five-axis image stabilization, internal 4K video recording in multiple formats, and 399 on-sensor phase-detection points. The camera’s high-speed autofocus also works with non-Sony lenses. You’ll find a 2.36 million-dot OLED viewfinder with 0.78x magnification and a Picture Profile system. The camera sports a rigid magnesium alloy design, and Sony introduced a mechanism to lock the mode dial. The a7R II supports Wi-Fi and NFC, and the camera can take full advantage of the company’s PlayMemories Mobile app for iOS and Android devices.

I was impressed by the [optical image stabilisation] power. During my tests I was able to shoot at speeds as slow as 1/20 and still achieve pin-sharp images. That’s doubly impressive when you consider how unforgiving a super-high resolution sensor such as this 42.4-megapixel one will be.

[T]he new AF system...is mind boggling good. Not only do you get 399 AF points that cover a wide spectrum of your viewfinder, but the system itself is snappy, fast and accurate…a challenging feat with a 42mp sensor.
