A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

based on the following sites

PROS

  • The HX90V offers a built-in 30x optical zoom lens--impressive for a camera of its size.
  • The HX90V includes both Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities, making it a good option for travel photographers or for people who want to get their pictures on the web quickly.
  • Even by compact camera standards, the HX90V is small, light and easy to handle.

CONS

  • The HX90V doesn't perform well at a high ISO, and image quality suffers in low light.
  • The HX90V doesn't offer the option of shooting in the RAW format.
  • The HX90V lacks the convenience of a touch screen.
Sony’s ultra compact HX90V features a 24-720 mm 30x optical zoom lens with built-in Wi-Fi and GPS--perfect for photographers on the go. Its sleek, compact design fits easily in the pocket and includes both a pop-up OLED viewfinder and a 180-degree flip screen. While the image quality is generally exceptional, the camera’s small 1/2.3 sensor struggles at ISO 800 or higher, and the camera can’t capture in RAW format--something most of its competitors can do.

On the whole the overhaul of the HX60V that has taken place to get to the HX90V has been successful. There have been certain omissions made, most noticeably the loss of the hotshoe and exposure compensation dial, however the target user of the HX90V will no doubt happily dispense with those two features for the reduction in size as a result of the changes.

The HX90V is a solidly performing all round travel compact camera that offers a lot but doesn't deliver in every single area. There have been some good improvements to image quality, but it's still not fantastic for low light shooting.

If you’re a traveller who will be shooting in blazing sunshine 90 per cent of the time, wanting fast shutter speeds and low ISO settings, then we can’t think of many better super-small cameras than the Sony HX90. However, if flexibility across light conditions is of more importance then you'd be better considering one of the older-generation Sony RX100 models, now available at very attractive prices. R

These days it's not enough to simply cram a massive zoom range into a tiny form factor, a successful compact super-zoom has to accommodate a lot more besides. With its earlier HX50(V) and HX60(V) Sony was already doing pretty well, but reducing its already tiny proportions while adding a flip-up screen and an electronic viewfinder it's not resting on its laurels.

If you're an enthusiastic photographer looking for a compact camera that you can slip in a pocket and take anywhere, Sony's RX100-series offers a great choice with a much larger-than-average sensor for spectacular image quality. But what if you prefer a far-reaching zoom lens, and are willing to trade off on sensor size to get it? Well, that's where the 18-megapixel Sony HX90V comes in.

All in all, from what we've experienced, the SonyHX90 really does set the bar high. It'll certainly give Panasonic something to chew over.
