VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The RX100 IV displays some of the best image quality found in any compact camera.
  • The pop-up electronic viewfinder is a smart design touch and has excellent resolution.
  • The advanced slow-motion recording capability is impressive.

CONS

  • Battery life is worse than previous versions of the camera, and no external charger is included to keep a spare battery charged.
  • The user interface is overwhelmed with feature choices making it difficult to use.
  • At close to $1000, the price of the compact camera rivals that of an entry-level DSLR, which makes this model pricey for its class.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV is an advanced compact still camera that video enthusiasts will love. That's because in addition to supporting 4K video, it also supports a slo-mo mode. The camera has a 1-inch 20.1MP CMOS sensor. An upgrade of the processor from previous versions of the model has resulted in significant performance improvements, such as a maximum continuous shooting speed of 16.1 frames per second. Both JPEG and RAW image formats are supported by the unit, which has a 24-70 mm lens. In addition to a pop-up flash, the unit has an OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch tilting screen.
