A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • Despite offering an impressive 30x built-in lens, the WX500 remains light and compact.
  • The WX500 has an extensive set of fun filters and a wide selection of scene and automatic modes that make it a particularly versatile point-and-shoot camera.
  • The WX500 is well equipped for burst photography, shooting at a speedy 10 fps.

CONS

  • The WX500 struggles with producing noise-free images, although at low ISOs this isn't much of a problem.
  • The WX500 isn't capable of shooting in the RAW format.
  • Although intended for users on the go, the WX500 is not weather resistant and doesn't include a pop-up viewfinder.
Sony's Cyber-shot WX500 is one of the smallest cameras on the market, making it a compelling choice for people who want a dedicated camera that improves on their smartphone's capabilities. Perhaps its biggest selling point is the 30x optical zoom lens with a focal range equivalent to 24-720 mm--impressive considering the WX500’s size. The 1/2.3 BSI CMOS sensor captures images up to 18 megapixels ensuring high-quality shots, and image stabilization and a 180-degree rotatable screen are onboard. The WX500 suffers from a couple of glaring omissions: a lack of RAW support and the absence of a viewfinder.

If the HX90 didn't exist the WX500 would seem very attractive. It has an excellent specification and should deliver the same image quality as the HX90, but the lack of a viewfinder could be an issue in sunny conditions.
