VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The battery life of the Z3 is phenomenal, capable of powering through an entire day and into the next without needing a charge.
  • The phone is waterproof and dust-proof.
  • The camera takes crisp photos, though the camera app itself could use better organization.

CONS

  • Sony's customized version of Android is far too much for any one device to handle, not to mention the end user having to wade through it. Yuck.
  • The glass back looks nice but proves to be problematic when you try to hold on to the phone.
  • It's a shame a device this good isn't widely available across the major U.S. carriers.
Sony's Xperia Z3 puts a 5.2-inch, 1080p definition screen in the palm of your hand. Inside the waterproof and dust-proof housing you'll find a 3,100 mAh battery, a 20.7 MP camera, and a 2.5 GHz processor. Three gigabytes of memory work in tandem with 16GB of storage, which is upgradeable to 128GB through a microSD card slot.

Overall, performance seems to be great, both around the interface, and within apps, including 3D games. There isn't any occasional choppiness like the one in the Galaxy S5, but there's always just a small amount of lag that prevents the experience from having that instantaneous response that comes with the iPhone line, or the MIUI Android overlay, for instance.

The Sony Xperia Z3 is beautifully designed, with a fantastic hi-resolution camera and great battery life; it's a really difficult device to find fault with. You might not be a fan of Sony's Xperia user-interface, or the fiddly SD-Card/charge port flaps, but the minor flaws pale into comparison when looked at against the myriad of positives. For us, it's one of the best Android phones in the world.
