VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The Xperia Z4 is one of the slimmest, lightest 10-inch tablets you can buy--and it's waterproof.
  • The base model Z4 is powerful, but for a few dollars more you can add a Bluetooth keyboard dock or a 4G LTE option.
  • The Xperia Z4 has a glorious high-res display with a higher pixel density than the iPad Air 2.

CONS

  • The Z4's slim, lightweight design is the result of a plastic body, which lends this expensive tablet a rather cheap feel.
  • With limited availability in the U.S., if you can find the configuration you want (with or without keyboard or LTE), it'll cost you at least $600.
  • With its poorly placed, weak-sounding the speakers, the Z4 isn't ideal for sharing movies or music with friends.
An iPad Air 2 rival in every sense, the Xperia Z4 is a high-end tablet designed for users thinking about replacing their laptop. To that end, Sony bundles Microsoft Office apps and offers an optional Bluetooth keyboard dock. The Xperia's 10-inch screen has a resolution that exceeds that of most laptops.

Available in both black and white, the Xperia Z4 Tablet is a truly stunning piece of kit. The tablet's soft, textured chassis feels just as luxurious as those of its metallic rivals, and its reinforced nylon corners (to help prevent drop damage) fit snugly in your palm.

The tablet and keyboard communicate via Bluetooth, not by a wired connection, but the tablet ‘knows’ when it is docked onto the keyboard thanks to its magnets. The tablet’s screen will automatically switch to stand-by mode when the clamshell is closed.

A tablet that can tolerate the elements has its perks. It can be used at the kitchen sink, around a pool, in the shower (guilty) or even as shelter from the rain. Don’t expect to use them below the waterline however, as the capacitive screen misconstrues water droplets for touch selections.

The Xperia Z4’s 10.1-inch screen is a beauty. It’s a 2,560 x 1,600 IPS display equipped with Sony’s “Triluminos” technology, and it’s simply stunning. Text and images are razor-sharp and incredibly detailed, even when you press your face unhealthily close to the screen.

While not a flashy feature, one of the best aspects of the UI is the easy ability to customize how you interact with your Xperia Z4. You can modify practical things, like choosing which settings buttons you'd like quick access to via the pull-down menu, accessible by swiping down from the top of the tablet, or you can change how the apps in your app tray are organized.

Sony’s Xperia Z4 Tablet could and should have been so much more than just another Android tablet. This is the company that once set the standard for chiclet keyboards with its VAIO laptops and previewed our future with the exceedingly thin VAIO X. Making an Android tablet that can effortlessly morph into an Office-running laptop should be in Sony’s DNA already.

There is a point of controversy surrounding the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, however, and that's the BKB50 keyboard dock that comes in the box. Not because a Bluetooth keyboard is necessarily a bad thing, but that you can't buy the tablet without it.

To say it has won me over is actually reasonable. I’ve used it a lot now, carried it around with me, replaced my laptop for a short period to see how it stacks up. I have to say, it has done nothing to annoy me, and everything to worm its way into my heart.

Over the years, we’ve seen Sony get close to offering the perfect slate, and the Z4 Tablet is the closest we’ve ever seen the company come. It’s not quite an A+, but it’s practically there, combining a beautiful design, water resistant superpowers, a relatively light OS, and a gorgeous screen into a very excellent package.
