Recommended, but seriously flawed. There are probably better alternatives.

PROS

  • It's a gorgeous watch that delivers old-world Tag Heuer craftsmanship in a smartwatch form factor. And it looks like a watch. You can't tell it's a smartwatch from a distance.
  • The transflective display is always on, and the display is readable in all lighting, including direct sunlight.
  • It has a faster processor and more memory than most smartwatches, making it snappy and responsive.

CONS

  • It costs $1500 and doesn't deliver much you can't get in a smartwatch for $300 except the name "Tag Heuer." (So if that's what you care about, none of the cons really matter.)
  • At 240 dpi, the display is not state-of-the-art sharp. Indeed, you can see pixels upon close inspection.
  • The watch lacks heart rate monitoring and other advanced fitness features.
Luxury watchmaker Tag Heuer has dipped its toes into the world of Android Wear with its own smartwatch, the Tag Heuer Connected. This watch is typical of most Android Wear devices--the functionality is essentially the same as, say, the Moto 360 or the Huawei Watch--but this is a $1500 luxury timepiece. It's made of titanium and has a very high build quality. It comes with a trio of watch faces that are modeled closely after the company's Carrera wristwatch (complete with shadows under the hands to simulate its analog roots). And after two years, Tag Heuer lets you swap your Connected for one of its traditional mechanical watches.

By normal watch standards, however, it’s far from overpriced. In fact, it sits at the entry-level end of the luxury watch spectrum, so watch lovers might consider it a bargain. And it’s these people the TAG Heuer Connected is aimed at.

One final point - which almost goes without saying - the display is round, leaving Apple way out on its own now in the round versus square debate. The Apple Watch still manages to look iconic but for how long?

A great looking and feeling smartwatch that's way out of the price range of most casual tech buyers. For our money, it looks like a better stab at such a thing than Apple's more expensive Watches.

The Tag Heuer Connected is really let down by its low-resolution screen. The 1.5-inch screen has a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. That creates a pixel density of 240ppi, which is pretty bad. In comparison, the Huawei Watch has a ppi of 286, and the Samsung Gear S2 and 42mm Apple Watch have 302 ppi.

If you're looking for a good Android Wear watch, you don't need to spend $1,500. It's completely unnecessary. That's not to say the Connected is a bad device -- far from it. Its build quality is fantastic, and it's comfortable in addition to being stylish. It's just that nothing about the experience feels worth that kind of money.
