Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The ADV Alpha offers rugged features that include an IPX3 weather-resistance rating, a durable earphone body made of magnesium and aluminum, and a waterproof remote control and microphone housed on a detachable rubberized cord.
  • Westone touts the 6.5 mm dynamic driver as supplying extended bass range without compromising sonic accuracy.
  • The cable contains reflective panels for improved visibility in low-light conditions.

CONS

  • The ADV Alpha is exceedingly expensive for an in-ear headphone.
  • The remote and mic are designed solely for iOS devices.
  • The cable, which loops up and behind the ear for better retention, is prone to falling off.
If you haven't heard of Westone until now, it's because the more than 50-year-old audio product manufacturer has focused its headphone efforts mostly on equipment for professional musicians. The Adventure Series ADV Alpha represents Westone's first foray into the consumer electronics market. Targeted at highly active users, the Alpha follows a Shure-like in-ear monitor design, while adding a number of important rugged features. You attach each earphone to one of several silicone or memory foam tips, which ship with the product. The earphone itself rests inside the folds of the outer ear, but the tip extends fully into the ear canal to help seal the sound.

They aren't clad in obnoxious extreme branding, but the Westone Adventure Series Alpha in-ears are marketed (and built) to withstand an extreme athlete. To give you a little taste of what I mean, you have to pull a ripcord in order to just open the box—and inside is a set of in-ears that are a paragon of durability with the chops to survive even the most extreme environs.

They are rugged, and they sound great. The Alpha gets just about everything right from a design standpoint—a removable cable with an inline remote and mic, a weatherproof design, and gobs of ear tips to ensure a secure fit. The audio seems almost secondary, but it's not.

Presumably the ADV Alpha will survive sweat and rain pretty well, too, although probably not being dropped from a kayak into a raging stream. Two more "adventure" features: a rugged but rather bulky waterproof, twist-top case, and reflective material woven into the headphone cable. Westone includes a feature that will likely make more of a performance difference than any fancy drivers or materials: 10 different pairs of interchangeable ear tips.

The 6.5mm drivers in each earpiece are housed in a lightweight magnesium chassis with up-and-over-the-ear cable routing. The design tends to keep the cables out of your face during workouts while at the same time remaining light enough so that they don't feel as though they are pulling your ears down. During regular 40-minute runs, the ADVs were so comfortable we nearly forgot we were wearing them.
