The Oura Ring sleep tracking lawsuit filed last week doesn't just ask whether the ring is accurate. It asks whether Oura's marketed 95% accuracy claim and the study cited against it are even measuring the same thing.
California resident Madison Surber says she paid $513.68 for an Oura Ring in 2025 after seeing the company market its sleep-stage tracking as "up to 95% accurate" against clinical sleep labs. Her proposed class action, filed last Thursday, Aug. 20, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by Clarkson Law Firm, seeks an injunction against the marketing along with restitution for affected customers, according to TechRepublic.
The complaint places Oura in a nearly $7 billion sleep-tracking market, according to USA Today. It lands at a moment when researchers have already warned that consumer sleep tech has outpaced the science needed to validate it (Sensors, 2024).

Bloomberg Law's summary of the filing lays out the legal theory: Oura allegedly "falsely advertised" its rings as able to measure sleep-cycle quality, a measurement the complaint argues requires brain-activity and eye-movement data the ring never collects (Bloomberg Law). That's the plaintiff's framing of what "measuring sleep quality" requires, not an independently established standard.
Oura disputes the suit outright. TechRepublic reported that an Oura spokesperson told TechCrunch, "We stand behind our science, research, and accuracy claims," and that a company spokesperson separately told USA Today Oura "dispute[s] the allegations in this complaint and intend[s] to defend against them" (TechRepublic).
Both numbers, the 95% and the 53%, get treated in the complaint as if they answer the same question. Whether they actually do depends on what each one measures, and that's where the case gets complicated.

Polysomnography defines sleep stages using scalp electrodes and facial sensors that track brain waves and eye movement. Oura's ring has none of that hardware; it infers stages instead from heart rate, heart-rate variability, movement, breathing, and skin temperature (TechRepublic; Bloomberg Law).
That difference in sensing matters, because "accurate" can mean several different things for a sleep device. It can mean correctly telling whether someone is asleep or awake. It can mean correctly classifying which stage a person is in during a specific window of the night. Or it can mean correctly estimating total minutes spent in each stage across an entire night, on average. A device can perform well at one of these and poorly at another, which is precisely the ambiguity the Oura sleep tracking accuracy lawsuit is built around.
Oura draws its own line here. The clearest independent data available comes from a 2024 study in the journal Sensors, which tested five consumer trackers, including Oura, against research-grade actigraphy and polysomnography in 53 adults over one night in a lab setting (Sensors, 2024).
The results cut both ways. Every device except one, the Garmin Vivosmart, estimated total sleep time about as well as research-grade actigraphy, and bias in REM-sleep estimates was low across all five devices tested (Sensors, 2024).
Deep sleep and light sleep told a different story. Oura specifically underestimated light sleep, and while its deep-sleep bias sat in the middle of the pack, other devices swung further, overestimating shorter deep-sleep periods and underestimating longer ones (Sensors, 2024). Every device also overestimated shorter wake periods overnight and underestimated longer ones, a pattern the study's authors described as systematic bias with real implications for how much these numbers should be trusted (Sensors, 2024).
The researchers behind that study opened their paper with a warning that applies directly to this case: consumer sleep-tracking technology has advanced faster than the science needed to validate it (Sensors, 2024). That's not a verdict on Oura specifically. It's a description of the exact gap a federal court is now being asked to weigh in on.

What the evidence does and doesn't settle
The complaint is a filing, not a finding. Its allegations haven't been tested in court, and Oura has said it will defend its science (TechRepublic).
What independent research supports is narrower than either side's framing suggests. The 2024 Sensors study found several sleep measures, like total sleep time and REM timing, tracked reasonably close to lab-grade methods, which cuts against the lawsuit's "coin flip" characterization (Sensors, 2024). But that same study found systematic bias in wake time, light sleep, and deep sleep across every device tested, including Oura, which cuts against a blanket 95% accuracy claim just as clearly (Sensors, 2024).
Neither finding resolves the actual question the lawsuit poses: whether Oura's ring can correctly classify which stage someone is in during a given window of a given night. That's a narrower, harder test than either total-sleep-time accuracy or a marketing headline can settle on its own, and it's the piece the current record doesn't answer.
That leaves a practical distinction for anyone wearing one of these rings. Treating it as a reasonable tool for spotting patterns over weeks or months is well supported. Treating a single night's REM or deep-sleep readout as clinical fact is a bigger claim than the current science, or Oura's own disclaimers, actually back.
