How to Change Settings on Facebook

By Andrew Tennyson

Learn how to change your Facebook account settings using both the Facebook website and the official Facebook app for mobile devices.

In the Settings panel, you can configure almost every element of your Facebook account, including basic items such as your name, how you receive notifications, and who can interact with you and view your content. How you access the Settings panel varies depending on whether you use the official Facebook app for mobile devices or the Facebook website.

Editing Your Settings Using the Facebook App

Facebook (Android 5.0)

In some cases, you may be presented with a series of customizable options controlled by check boxes or radio buttons.

Editing Your Settings Using the Facebook Website

Step 1

You have to be logged in to your account to access your settings.

Click the down-facing arrow in the top-right corner of your Facebook page and click Settings in the drop-down menu.

Step 2

Facebook (Chrome)

Select the settings category you want to edit, or if you want to edit general account settings such as your username, primary email or password, remain on this page. Additional categories are listed along the left of the page; they include Security, Privacy, Timeline and Tagging and Notifications, among others.

Step 3

Deactivate your account via the Security Settings screen.

Click the Edit link next to the setting you want to change. A description of what a particular setting controls is displayed next to each item. Read this description carefully before changing the setting. If you're unsure about what a setting controls, visit Facebook's Help Center to learn more.

Step 4

As with other settings pages, descriptions are provided describing what each setting controls on Facebook.

Modify the selected setting. The modifications vary depending on the setting you change. If you’re changing who can look you up on Facebook, for example, click the provided drop-down menu and select Everyone, Friends of Friends or Friends.

Step 5

Click Close or Save Changes to apply the changes to the selected setting. Whether Close or Save Changes is presented varies depending on which setting you edit.

Tip

If you manage a page, the page's settings are configured separately from your personal account settings. Click Settings at the top of the page to access settings for the page.
