How to Change Settings on Facebook So People Can't See Your Friends

By Amy McClain

Facebook gives you an array of customizable privacy settings. Your friends list, by default, can be viewed by other Facebook users. If you don't want everyone to see your list, you can adjust your settings. Change your settings to hide your list from everyone, or create a list of friends to hide it from. To access your privacy settings, you'll need to sign in to your account on your computer rather than on a mobile device.

Step 1

Direct your browser to Enter your email address and password to sign in.

Step 2

Click the "Account" link, located in the top-right corner of the page. A drop down menu appears. Click "Privacy Settings." The "Choose Your Privacy Settings" page displays.

Step 3

Click the "View Settings" link, located near the top of the page below the "Connecting on Facebook" header. Scroll down the list until you see the "See Your Friend List" option.

Step 4

Click the drop down menu, located to the right of "See Your Friend List." You can make your friend list visible to only friends or to friends of friends from here. To see more options, click "Customize" from the menu. A pop-up window opens.

Step 5

Click the drop down menu under "Make This Visible To." To hide your list from everyone, click "Only Me" from the list. To hide your list from only certain people, click the text box below "Hide This From." As you type names, matching Facebook friends will appear. Click the names you wish to hide your list from.

Step 6

Click "Save Setting" to save the changes you made.
