How to Delete Pages in OpenOffice Writer Documents

If your OpenOffice Writer document contains an expanse of blank space, you can easily delete pages you do not want without the hassle of guessing where the page starts and stops.

Using the “Nonprinting Characters” Utility

Step

Open OpenOffice Writer. Open a document by clicking "File" and "Open". Find your document and click "Open".

Step

Click "View" and "Nonprinting Characters". Your document's view will change and you will see a series of codes indicating page breaks and other formatting.

Locate the reverse "P" symbol, which indicates a page break, at the end of the page or paragraph before the blank or other unwanted page you want to delete. Highlight the symbol with your mouse.

Step

Press the "Backspace" or "Delete" key on your keyboard to delete the symbol and remove the page break.

Step

Press the "Delete" key repeatedly to remove any blank lines that may be present before the next paragraph or page. You will see your document's lines reformatting.

Step

Click "View" and "Nonprinting Characters" to turn off the utility.

Using the “Web Layout/Online Layout” View

Step

Open OpenOffice Writer. Open a document by clicking "File" and "Open". Find your document and click "Open".

Step

Click "View" and "Online Layout" or "Web Layout". Your document's view will change and you will see your document in a website-type view.

Step

Click at the beginning of the page you want to delete. Press the "Delete" key to remove the page. You may have to press the "Delete" key repeatedly to remove blank lines before the next paragraph or page. You will see your document's lines reformatting.

Step

Click "View" and "Print Layout" to return to OpenOffice Writer's default view.

Using the “CTRL” and “End” Key Sequence

Step

Open OpenOffice Writer. Open a document by clicking "File" and "Open". Find your document and click "Open".

Step

Press the "CTRL" and "End" keys together to jump to the last page of your document. Use this method if to remove blank pages at the end of your document.

Step

Press the "Backspace" key to delete the page. You may have to press the "Backspace" key repeatedly to remove multiple blank pages at the end of your document.
