TiVo is a personal DVR system that provides premium features compared to a standard cable box DVR. A TiVo box's software can be updated as new versions are released so that users can use the latest features available for their box. Normally, TiVo automatically updates, and usually does so in the middle of the night. A TiVo user can, however, force his or her TiVo box into downloading the new software before the scheduled update.
Step 1
Access your TiVo menu by pressing the "TiVo" button.

Select "Messages and Settings," followed by "Settings," followed by "Network and Phone."
Step 3
Select "Connect Now" to force your TiVo to connect to the service and receive the updates. You may have to force a connection two more times until the Last Call Status displays "Pending Restart."
