How to Get Rid of the About:Blank Page

By Andrew Meer

Although most major Web browsers feature a default website to which the browser re-directs you at startup, corrupted profile data can instead cause your Web browser to display a blank page with the subject “about:blank” on the URL bar. You can, however, rectify this issue by manually inserting the URL of your desired startup page into the Home Page editing screen on your Web browser’s Settings or Options configuration panel.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Press “Alt-X” to bring up the Tools menu, then select “Internet Options.”

Step 2

Click the “General” tab. Under the Home Page section, replace “about:blank” with the URL of any website of your choice.

Step 3

Click “Apply,” then click “OK.” Restart Internet Explorer. The website that you specified should automatically show up when you launch the browser.

Mozilla Firefox

Step 1

Press “Alt-T-O” to open the Firefox Options configuration panel.

Step 2

Click the “General” tab. Next to the Home Page field, replace “about:blank” with the URL of a website.

Step 3

Click “OK” to save the changes.

Google Chrome

Step 1

Type “Chrome://Settings” (without quotes) into the URL bar and press “Enter.”

Step 2

Click “Set Pages” next to Open a Specific Page or Pages. Click the “about:blank” page on the Startup Pages list and replace the “about:blank” field with the URL of a website.

Step 3

Click “OK” to save the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can automatically set any Web page or website that you are currently on as the default home page for your Web browser. Simply click the “Use Current Page” button on the Home Page editing screen on your Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome Web browser.
  • At times, Internet Explorer may display a blank Web page alongside any other Web page that you may attempt to open. Resetting Internet Explorer usually fixes this issue. To reset Internet Explorer, click the "Advanced" tab on the Internet Options window, then click "Reset." Note that resetting Internet Explorer will remove your personal settings and disable all add-ons. To enable add-ons manually, you must open the Add-on Manager. To do so, press "Alt-X" and then select "Manage Add-ons."
  • In addition to corrupted profile data, certain types of malware can also hijack and reset your Web browser's Home Page settings. To ensure the safety of your computer and to prevent the "about:blank" issue from recurring, perform a scan of your computer using a trusted malware scanner.
