How to Insert Page Numbers in Word. Entering page numbers into Microsoft Word (MS Word) can be a bit confusing at first, especially if you want to begin numbering the document starting on a page somewhere in the middle of the document. The following will show you how to insert page numbers in MS Word starting anywhere in the document.
To Start Numbering From the Beginning of the Document
Open the document.
Click "Insert" at the top toolbar. A drop down menu will appear. Click "Page Numbers" from the menu. The "Page Numbers" tool box will appear.
Choose where you would like your page numbers to be placed. You will be given the option of inserting the numbers at the top of the page (the header) or at the bottom (the footer).
Decide the alignment. Choose if you would like the number at the right, left, center or the inside or outside of the pages.
Click the box that says "Show Number on First Page" or leave it blank if you want the document to begin numbering at "2" on the second page.
Click the "Format" button at the bottom of the toolbox. You will be given some options of what kind of numbering format you would like to use. Click and add your choices and click "OK."
To Start Numbering on a Page in the Middle of the Document
Click at the beginning of the sentence on the first line of the page you want to start numbering.
Choose "Insert" from the top toolbar. Select "Break" from the dropdown menu and then "Continuous Section Break." Click "OK."
Select "Insert" once again and then "Page Numbers" from the drop down menu. Choose the position of the numbers just as before (in the header or the footer) and the number alignment.
Click "Format" at the bottom of the toolbox. Then click "Start at" and enter "1" or whatever number you choose. Click "OK" and then click "OK" again.
You can also click "View" at the toolbar and then click "Header and Footer" from the menu. Use the toolbar that appears when editing the header or footer to enter and to format the page numbers. Add any other words into the header or footer if you desire.
