You don't need complicated software and equipment to record your own amateur music. All you need is a computer, microphone and an inexpensive software program. Simple recording programs are available online—some with free trials. This is a great way to hear your singing voice on tape and either send it around to friends or post it on your website for fun.

Step 1

Go to the "Start" menu on your computer. Navigate to "Programs," then "Accessories" to see if you have the sound recorder software that comes standard with some computers. If so, open that up.

Step 2

If you don't have a program, download a music sound recorder software program online. There are a number of simple recorder programs, such as the ones at and

Step 3

Plug your microphone into the back of your computer. Turn the volume on the microphone up all the way—you can then adjust the sound in your recorder program as needed.

Step 4

Press "Record" (usually a red circle in the program) and do a test recording. Stop and play it back on your computer speakers to assure that the sound comes through clearly. You also can use a headset to hear the playback.

Step 5

Pick a quiet room for your singing session. Turn off televisions, radios (unless you are using it to play in instrumental to go with your song), and other sources of background noise. If you have a laptop and know of a specific place, such as a classroom at your school, that is very quiet and has good acoustics, bring your laptop there to sing.

Step 6

Sing into the microphone. Keep it about four inches from your mouth at all times. Be confident and pronounce your words clearly.

Step 7

Stop the recording when finished and save it as an MP3, WAV, AVI or WMA file. There may be more options, but these are the most common choices.

Things You'll Need

  • Microphone

  • Sound recorder software

Keep in mind that the longer the recording, the bigger the file. Many song MP3s are about 1 megabyte in size. Create three different versions of your song to choose from. If you have a personal website or social networking profile, embed your sound file into the page so that your song will play when the page loads. See "Resources" for instructions on how to do this.
