How to Recover My Favorites in Internet Explorer

By Aksana Nikolai

Many Web browsers allow users to bookmark favorite or frequently visited Web sites. In Internet Explorer, bookmarked items are called “Favorites.” There might come a time when you want to switch to a new user account on your computer. You probably will want to recover your Favorites in the new account instead of bookmarking them all over again. Internet Explorer’s bookmark manager allows you to recover your Favorites by exporting and importing them into the new account.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet Explorer 7 or later version

Export

Step 1

Log in to the user account containing Favorites that you want to export and launch Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Click on the “Add to Favorites” button on the Explorer toolbar if using Internet Explorer 7. Select the “Import and Export” option from the dropdown menu. This will launch the “Import/Export Wizard”. If you are using Internet Explorer 8, click on the “Favorites” button and then click on the arrow next to “Add to Favorites.” Then click “Import and Export.”

Step 3

Select the “Export Favorites” option in the “Choose an action to perform” section if using Internet Explorer 7. Click “Next,” which will route you to the screen called “Export Favorites Source.” If using Internet Explorer 8, click on “Export from a file” in the “Import/Export Settings” dialog box and click “Next.”

Step 4

Decide where you want to store the Favorites. The default option is a file called “Bookmark.htm.” Indicate the new file and folder name if you want to use a name other than “Bookmark.htm” or put the Favorites in a folder other than “Documents.” Click “Export.” If you entered a file name that is already in use on your computer, Explorer will ask if you want to replace the existing file. If so, click “Yes.” If not, click “No” and provide an alternate name.

Step 5

Click “Finish” to export the Favorites.

Import

Step 1

Log in to the user account to which you want to import your Favorites and launch Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Click on the “Add to Favorites” button on the Explorer toolbar if using Internet Explorer 7. Select the “Import and Export” option from the dropdown menu. This will launch the “Import and Export” wizard. If you are using Internet Explorer 8, click on the “Favorites” button and then click on the arrow next to “Add to Favorites.” Then click “Import and Export.”

Step 3

Highlight the “Import Favorites” option in the “Import/Export Wizard” and click “Next” if using Internet Explorer 7. If using Internet Explorer 8, click on “Import from a file” and click “Next.”

Step 4

Click on “Next” again if you accept the default import option, which is to import from “Bookmark.htm.” If you put the exported Favorites into a file under another name, click on the “Browse” button and select the desired file. Alternatively, type the file name and location into the “Import from a File” field. Click on “Open” once you have found the desired file and then click “Import.”

Step 5

Click “Finish” to import your Favorites.
