Brocade network equipment includes SAN (storage area network) devices, Ethernet switches and wireless systems. The Brocade Silkworm line is an example of fiber channel switches that are installed primarily in the SAN environments. If you need to redeploy a Silkworm switch into a different environment, resetting the switch to factory default settings is a quick method that could save the time required to troubleshoot issues caused by an old configuration. Reset a Brocade Silkworm switch to factory defaults through the serial console port.

  • DB9 serial console cable
  • Microsoft Windows 7 computer with nine-pin serial port and Microsoft HyperTerminal installed

Step 1

Plug the serial console cable into the nine-pin serial port on the Windows 7 computer. Attach the other end of the serial console cable into the serial console port on the Brocade Silkworm switch.

Step 2

Click the "Start" button on PC desktop computer and click the "Search" box. Type "hypertrm.exe" in the Search box and press the "Enter" key. The HyperTerminal window will appear.

Step 3

Type a name for the serial connection in the "Name" field and tap the "Enter" key. Click the "Connect using:" box and select the "Com" port on the Windows 7 computer that is connected to the Brocade Silkworm switch. Select the "OK" button. Click the "Bits per second" box and select the "9600" option. Click the "Flow control:" box and select the "None" option. Click the "OK" button.

Step 4

Tap the "Enter" key a few times and the Brocade command prompt will display. Type the console password if requested and press the "Enter" key. Type "configDefault" and press the "Enter" key. The switch configuration is now reset to factory default settings.
