When you want to friend another person on Facebook, you must send a request to be friends. Once the other person approves the request, he will appear in your list of friends. To send a friend request, log in to Facebook, type the person's name in the search bar and select the person you want to friend from the search results. Click the "Add Friend" button below the profile header to send the request. The button will not appear if a person does not accept friend requests, or if you are already friends.
Viewing and Cancelling Requests
To view your outstanding friend requests, click the "people" icon at the top of the page, choose "Find Friends" and select "View Sent Requests." Hover your mouse over the status that shows "Friend Request Sent" and choose "Cancel Request" to cancel the invitation.
Following Other People
Use friend requests for people you know well. If you want to receive updates from a particular person whom you don't know well, such as a celebrity, select the "Follow" button instead of sending a friend request. The other person must allow following by any Facebook member for the button to appear.
