How to Transfer Bookmarks to a New Computer

Internet surfers often locate an interesting website and then forget the URL later. The bookmark feature records the Web addresses of websites for easy retrieval later. Once a bookmark is added, the user can activate the bookmark bar. This puts links to your bookmarks on your toolbar under your address bar. This feature is particularly useful for email and social networking sites, putting commonly used sites just a click or two away.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer on your old computer.

Step 2

Click “File” on the top menu bar. Select “Import and Export” from the list. Click “Next.” Choose “Export Favorites” and press “Next.” Select the bookmark folders that you are exporting. Click “Next.” Select the folder where you want to save your favorites. Click “Save.” Click “Next” and then “Finish.”

Step 3

Transfer the file to your new computer. Send the file by email as an attachment or save it to a flash drive and upload it to your new computer.

Step 4

Open Internet Explorer on your new computer.

Step 5

Click “File” on the top menu bar. Select “Import and Export” from the list. Select “Import Favorites” from the list. Click “Next.” Select the file from your computer. Click “Next.” Select a folder to import the list into. Click “Next.” Press “Finish” and then “OK.”

Safari

Step 1

Open Safari on your old computer.

Step 2

Click “File” and choose “Export Bookmarks” from the list. Name your bookmarks file. Choose a save location. Click “Save.”

Step 3

Transfer the file to your new computer. Send the file by email as an attachment or save it to a flash drive and upload it to your new computer.

Step 4

Open Safari on your new computer.

Step 5

Click “File” and choose “Import Bookmarks.” Select the file from your computer. Click “Open.” The folder appears on the right side. Name the folder.

Firefox

Step 1

Open Firefox on your old computer.

Step 2

Click “Bookmarks” from the top menu bar. Choose “Organize Bookmarks.” Select the option to “Import and Backup.” Choose “Export HTML” from the list. Select a folder to save the file to. Click “Next.”

Step 3

Transfer the file to your new computer. Send the file by email as an attachment or save it to a flash drive and upload it to your new computer.

Step 4

Open Firefox on your new computer.

Step 5

Click “Bookmarks” from the top menu bar. Choose “Organize Bookmarks.” Select the option to “Import and Backup.” Choose “Import HTML” from the list. Click the radio button for “From a HTML file.” Click “Next.” Select the file from your computer. Click “Open.”
