How to Use a Guitar Hero Controller on a Computer

By Rebecca Tait

There are two reasons you should want to connect your console Guitar Hero guitars to a computer. The first is to save money so you do not have to buy another guitar for Guitar Hero games that are available on the computer. The second reason is to avoid playing on the keyboard for other games such as Frets on Fire. This guide will explain what is needed and how to get the PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360 guitars working on your computer.

Things You'll Need

  • PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 Guitar Hero guitars
  • PS2 to USB adaptor-for PS2 guitars only
  • Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver--for wireless Xbox 360 guitars only
  • Drivers for Xbox 360 guitars- links provided

The Steps

Step 1

Figure out which console the Guitar Hero Controller you have is for, a PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360 guitar. PlayStation 3 guitars require the least effort and knowledge to get working because the guitar literally needs to be plugged into a USB port and that’s it. The PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero controllers cannot be connected to a USB port.

Step 2

Buy the necessary materials. The PS3 or wired Xbox 360 guitars do not need any more hardware purchased to play them on a computer. However, if you have a PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero Controller and want to play it on a computer, you will need to buy a $20 PS2 to USB adapter. The wireless Xbox 360 guitar needs the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver which costs $20.

Step 3

Download necessary drivers. The Xbox 360 Guitar Hero controllers need drivers downloaded and installed to work properly. See the links below to download them for 32 bit and 64 bit. The PlayStation 2 and 3 guitars do not need any additional software.

Step 4

Connect the controllers to your computer. Plug your Guitar Hero controller into a USB port/plug in the adaptor or use the wireless receiver. Do not forget to turn on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 guitars. Then, wait for your computer to install the new hardware and the Guitar Hero guitars are ready to use.

Step 5

Check to see if they work. See if your computer recognizes/installed the hardware. This can be accomplished by going into the control panel, clicking on Hardware and Sound, and then on Game Controllers. Not only can you see if the Guitar Hero guitars are installed, but you can configure some of the settings for the controller. The next best way to see if everything is working is to play the games and have fun. Rock Band guitars should work the same as Guitar Hero guitars.
