SD cards most often are used in cameras, and in order to use the pictures or videos in your company presentations or marketing material you have to copy them directly to your computer. Many models of computers come with an SD card reader already installed; if yours is such a computer, then the process is simple. If you do not have this option, then you can use the USB cable that came with your camera to read the pictures. If you have lost this cable for your camera, then you can obtain an inexpensive SD card reader from nearly any electronics store. SD cards are presented to you as an external hard drive on Windows 8, and you can copy and move files directly from them just as you would any other device.

Step 1

Check your computer to see if it has a built-in SD card reader. Not all computers have this option; however, if yours has this feature, insert the SD card into the slot. The SD card will appear in Windows File Manager as an external hard drive, and you can copy files directly from it.

Step 2

Insert the SD card into your camera if you are trying to get pictures or video from your camera. Then, connect your camera to your computer using the adapter cable that was included with the camera. Obtain a replacement cable if you do not have one. Your camera will appear in Windows File Manager as an external hard drive, and you can copy files directly from it.
