How to Create a Database DAT File in Notepad

By Alexander Poirier

The DAT file extension designates a data file that contains Web information of some kind. Since these files are simply containers of information, they can be created using a simple text editor like Notepad. In order to create a DAT file in Notepad, you must enter the fields that you want the DAT file to contain in the Notepad document and save the document as a DAT file from the "Save As" menu.

Step 1

Right-click anywhere on the computer's desktop and move your mouse cursor over the "New" option. Select the "Text Document" option from the context menu to create a new document in Notepad.

Step 2

Type the fields that you want to be present in the DAT file in the Notepad document. Each field should be in the following format: "Field Description: $field."

Step 3

Click the "File" menu and select the "Save As" option. Select the "All Types" option from the "Save as type" drop-down menu.

Step 4

Type the name for the file in the space labeled "File name," followed by the ".dat" file extension. For example, if you wanted to name the file "datfile," then you would enter "datfile.dat" in the "File name" space.

Step 5

Click the "Save" button to save the Notepad document as a DAT file.
