Many social networking sites, such as MySpace, allow you to customize your profile with music, videos, pictures and decorative backgrounds. Facebook profiles are not set up to be customized in this way; pictures are limited and you can't change the colors of the basic Facebook page, alter your background or add music. You can get around this by selecting a striking profile picture and using text generators or ASCII art. You can also install Facebook applications designed to add button graphics and other embellishments to your profile page.
Adding a Profile Photo
Log into Facebook and go to your Profile page.
Video of the Day
Click on your current profile picture to bring up the Edit Your Profile Picture menu.
Upload a photograph from your computer or go to your Facebook album to select a photograph. This will become your new profile picture.
Log into your Facebook account and click on the "Edit my profile" link near the top left, next to your profile picture.
Open a separate tab or window in your browser. Navigate to a library of ASCII art -- images made up of keyboard characters, also known as text art. One example is Fsymbols' Text Art page (fsymbols.com/text-art).
Select the piece of art you want to use by left-clicking near the top and moving the mouse to the bottom while holding the left button down. The image should be highlighted. Move the mouse pointer somewhere inside the image, right-click and select Copy from the Edit menu or press "Ctrl-C."
Return to your profile page. Paste the text art into one of the text fields using the right-click Edit menu or pressing "Ctrl-V." Save your profile.
Fancy Text and Symbols
Log on to Facebook. Click on the "Edit my profile" link.
Open a separate tab or window in your browser. Navigate to a text generator such as Weirdmaker (sherv.net/weirdmaker.html), which gives you weird symbol text; or Tarty (fsymbols.com/generators/tarty), which converts text into symbol blocks to make giant letters.
Enter your desired text in the input field. Copy the output text from the output fields.
Go back to Facebook. Paste the new text into one of the text fields using the right-click Edit menu or "Ctrl-V." Save your profile.
Log into Facebook. Navigate to an app for decorating your profile such as "Pieces of Flair."
Install the application on your Facebook. Pay attention to the settings that the app requires; some applications may want to access parts of your Facebook profile that you wish to keep private.
Add badges, buttons or decorations according to the application's specific instructions.

You can also use fancy symbol text in your notes and Facebook status updates. Confuse your friends by posting upside-down.
Be careful when installing Facebook applications -- rogue apps can hijack your account or compromise your computer's security.
