Step 1

Sketch out your designs in a sketchbook. Be as creative as you like, since Photoshop will allow you to reproduce just about any design your imagination can devise.

Step 2

Open a new document in Photoshop. Set the size you will need, along with your resolution requirements. If you will be printing your designs, a pixel resolution of 150 is best.

Step 3

Scan your drawings in and save them as JPEG files. Then open them in Photoshop for cutting and pasting into your new document. Use this layer as a reference layer for creating the design. Or you can simply reproduce your designs by drawing them using the pen tool. The bezier curve pen tool allows you to create smooth lines by just applying a stroke to the Path. If you have a drawing tablet with your computer, use it to trace and recreate your designs. It will be much easier than using your mouse.

Step 4

Set customized colors by using the color palette tool. The various filters will allow you to apply a wide range of effects. You can also select sections of your garment and add patterns to the cloth by using the Fill tool and selecting the pattern you want from the top of the page.
