A data label is a static part of a chart, report or other dynamic layout. The label defines the information in the line item. Labels are an integral part of reporting and application development.

Significance

Without a data label, the user is left not knowing the importance of the numbers or information listed in the report's line item. Data labels are created by the programmer, and they are one of the easier parts of the form to create. The label only needs some text entered into its text box property; no other programming is required to implement a label with a report.

Features

Data labels are typically set in black font, but some reports color-code the data labels. This is commonly done when the report creator has a graph with several lines that represent individual data. The data labels are used to identify each line and the information the label represents. Data labels make reading reports more intuitive.

Size

When creating reports, the data labels should be a neutral font, and it should not detract from the information presented. The labels are there to help users understand the data, but labels that are too bright, large or in an unprofessional font can make the report harder to read.
