How to Make Nutrition Facts Labels

Making and selling food products is big business and large food companies have departments that create their nutrition labels. When starting out or working in a small food business, making the nutrition facts part of the label for your product can take all the fun out of going into the food business. Read below for some easy to follow steps on how to make a simple nutrition facts using basic software.

Things You'll Need

  • Personal computer with Microsoft Excel

Step 1

Have available the nutrition information for the food in question such as the serving size, the nutrient information (calories, fat and cholesterol information, carbohydrates, sugars and fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals) and the daily values for each nutrient.

Step 2

Using Microsoft Excel, merge the cells in rows 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 14 and 15 inside the box. Make a thick bottom border on rows 3 and 15 and a medium thick bottom border on row 5. Make a regular line bottom border on all the other rows. Set row 1 to font size 13; rows 4, 6 and 18 to 6 pt. font; and the remaining rows to 8 pt. font. This makes a long format Nutrition Facts box.

Step 3

Enter the text and proper nutrient values as seen in the attached image. Use the proper font types and sizes, predefined by the FDA for food labels.

Step 4

Make a simplified format Nutrition Facts panel by deleting rows 8, 9, 10, 13 and 17. State in row 16, using a 6 pt. font, "Not a significant source of....." and list the items for the rows removed. At least eight nutrients in the Nutrition Facts box must have values of zero in order to use this format.

Step 5

Check out Nutrition Facts software programs for purchase if looking for a more advanced creation of nutrition facts labels. Many programs are very expensive, particularly for a beginning business, but there are reliable programs out there designed just for the small business user.
