If the storage space on your mac is full or almost full, it's time to free up some space. You can manually sort through your files and delete the items that take up the most space, like movies, podcasts, or systems you no longer use. You can also delete unneeded emails in the Mail app, or you can move some of the files you don't regularly access to external storage like an external drive or iCloud.
But the quickest and most efficient way to free up storage on your mac is to optimize the storage space on your computer's disc.

How to optimize storage space
- From the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen, click About This Mac.
- Click Storage. The storage bar will begin calculating the amount of used and available storage space. When it's done calculating, color-coordinated segments represent the different categories of files.
- Click the Manage button to open the storage management window where you can choose to store files, photos, and messages in iCloud; optimize storage by removing TV shows and movies you've already watched, automatically empty Trash; reduce clutter by sorting through documents and other content you don't need.
- As you delete files and optimize storage, you can measure progress by watching the available space shown on the storage bar.
Before you delete files, just make sure you can live without them and your computer doesn't need them to function.
