Hitachi Rear Projection TV Troubleshooting

By Christy Bagasao

Users of the Hitachi rear-projection televisions may experience the occasional glitch in TV performance. Calling a repairman every time you experience trouble with your Hitachi TV is expensive and time-consuming. Although the different Hitachi models vary, most of the problems that arise with rear projection Hitachi TVs can be handled with a few basic troubleshooting steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Remote control
  • Fresh batteries

Step 1

Check basic power sources for your Hitachi TV if it will not turn on. Check that the power cord is plugged in to a properly fitting outlet. Ensure that the outlet works by plugging a separate appliance into the outlet. Unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds to a minute, and plug it back in. Replace the batteries in the remote control and ensure they are installed in the correct direction. Turn your Hitachi rear projection TV on using first the remote power button and then the power button on the set to determine if the problem is with the remote control.

Step 2

Eliminate overheating if the Hitachi rear projection television is shutting off randomly. Move it at least 6 inches away from the wall and several feet from any heating elements, such as heaters or sunny windows. Check that the rear vents are not blocked in any way. Vacuum the vents if possible.

Step 3

Disable the sleep function if the Hitachi TV is shutting down by itself. Use the remote to access the "Sleep" function through the "Menu" button. Select "Off" and press "Enter."

Step 4

Adjust the screen settings if the picture is washed out or not visible, but your Hitachi TV is still producing sound. Access the main menu through the remote "Menu" button, select "Settings," and use the remote arrows to adjust the brightness and contrast until the picture meets your standards. Your model may allow the same access from an on-set button.

Step 5

Restore sound on a muted television by pressing the "Mute" or "Volume" buttons on the remote control. Check that all cables connecting the television to an external audio device are fully connected. Disconnect and reconnect all cables. Unplug the audio device from the wall and reconnect.

Step 6

Discontinue use of microwaves, hair dryers, neon lights and other electronic devices that may be causing dark spots or lines or otherwise interfering with the picture on your Hitachi rear projection TV.

Step 7

Disconnect all external components such as DVD players, video game systems and set-top devices. Unplug each from the wall and then plug it back in. Reconnect them one at a time into a different AV jack or HDMI input. Ensure that the Hitachi rear projection TV is set to the appropriate input by running through all the options with the "Input" button on your TV or remote.

Step 8

Check the manual that came with your Hitachi rear projection TV if your issue is not fixed by these troubleshooting procedures. Manuals can also be downloaded online. If your television still does not work, call a professional rather than opening the TV cabinet yourself.
